How does your research score in leading academic databases? How effective is the collaboration with third parties? And how does your research compare with other similar research projects? The UG supports researchers who want to track and analyse the academic impact of their research.

Research Intelligence Services

The UG Research Intelligence Services department helps researchers to answer the above-mentioned questions. They provide expert advice and training to teach you to demonstrate the academic and societal impact of your research in grant applications, for example, or portfolios. In addition, they support research groups, the faculty, and the university in defining and improving their research strategy, and they play an important role in recognizing top-class talent. They carry out impact studies and can help you to compile the reports needed for the Standard Evaluation Protocol (SEP).

SciVal

SciVal is an Elsevier analysis tool that analyses the performance of your research. It can also be used to compare your research with other research projects, to analyse collaborations, and to study research trends.

Responsible use of metrics in research assessment

Would you like to use metrics to demonstrate your impact in grant applications, evaluations or hiring? You need to ensure that the metrics you choose and the way you use them abide by the University of Groningen's Responsible Research Assessment Principles. The principles summarize evaluation practices to avoid and positive alternatives to adopt in research assessment, and in the recruitment, recognition and reward of researchers and are based on the latest scientometric and policy research.

The Altmetric tool can help you to analyse the societal impact of your research. This tool measures societal impact by using various indicators, such as the media's focus on your publication.

Communication plays an important role in creating academic and societal impact. Researchers can seek publicity themselves, or the media may also approach you as a researcher. The UG has various support services that can help you to make the most of your external, and internal, communication.

There are various options and channels for announcing your news. Contact the communication advisor of your faculty to discuss your options. The central Communication Office can also offer advice and help you to bring your news to the attention of the media and the public.
