Finalists Ben Feringa Impact Award 2024 announced

On Tuesday, 21 May 2024, the annual Ben Feringa Impact Award will be presented. With this award, the RUG gives an impulse to the recognition and appreciation of impact-driven research. Ben Feringa himself will also present the award this year to the winning researchers and students. This edition of the ceremony also serves as the kickoff of a wonderful RUG-lustrum week.

The award

The award will be presented in two categories: researchers and students. For each category, one award winner or award-winning team will be declared during the ceremony. The winning project in the student category will receive a prize of €2500 to spend freely. This amount is financed by the Ubbo Emmius Fund. The winning project in the researchers category will receive a prize of € 5000 to be spent on further knowledge utilization.

The finalists

Student category:

  • "Food Gardens in Westerkwartier: Challenges and Opportunities" - by Martin Ottens, Leslie Knigge and Yasmin Madsen (Campus Fryslân)
  • "Geospatial Data in International Development, the Case of Malawi" - by Jonas Goebel (Faculty of Arts)
  • "Granting access to health data for secondary purposes - 'Good governance' assessment of legal schemes for Dutch HDAB" - by Anastasija Spajic (Faculty of Law)


Researcher category:

  • "MyLeg - A Smart and Intuitive Transfemoral Bionic Leg" - by Raffaella Carloni (Faculty of Science & Engineering)
  • "Public Participation and the Willingness of People to Contribute to the Energy Transition" - by Goda Perlaviciute (Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences)
  • "URinControl: App-based Treatment for Urinary Incontinence"- by Anne Loohuis (Faculty of Medical Sciences/UMCG)


This year's presentation of the Ben Feringa Impact Award will take place in the Aula of the Academy Building. Marcos Guimaraes (YAG) will serve as the chairman of the day and Marthe Walvoort (FSE) will deliver a keynote.
